Freedom 250 Grand Prix DC and How It May Affect Your Move This Weekend

The Freedom 250 Grand Prix in DC will bring IndyCar racing to the National Mall on August 22–23, 2026. It will also bring extensive road closures, parking restrictions, security checkpoints and heavy pedestrian traffic to downtown Washington.

If you are moving in DC this weekend or operating a moving company you should prepare for delays well beyond the racecourse. Streets around the National Mall, Penn Quarter, Federal Triangle, Capitol Hill and Southwest DC will be affected.

A normal 15-minute drive across downtown could take significantly longer. Moving trucks may also have difficulty reaching loading docks, apartment entrances and reserved curb space.

When Is the Freedom 250 Grand Prix in DC?

The Freedom 250 Grand Prix will take place Saturday, August 22, and Sunday, August 23, 2026.

Saturday includes IndyCar practice, qualifying and IROC events. The main IndyCar race will take place Sunday and will be broadcast live on FOX.

The temporary 1.7-mile street circuit runs through the National Mall area near Pennsylvania Avenue, Constitution Avenue, Independence Avenue and several major north-south streets.

Although the racing happens over two days, road restrictions began before the event and some will remain in place through August 26 or later.

Areas to Avoid

The most affected areas include the National Mall, Penn Quarter, Federal Triangle, Capitol Hill, L’Enfant Plaza and Southwest DC.

Major closures affect parts of:

  • Pennsylvania Avenue
  • Constitution Avenue
  • Independence Avenue
  • 3rd, 4th, 6th, 7th, 9th and 12th streets
  • Madison and Jefferson drives
  • L’Enfant Plaza
  • 12th Street Expressway
  • Entrances near the 3rd Street and 9th Street tunnels

Additional restrictions begin Friday, August 21, at 3:00 a.m. Some streets will remain closed after the race for event breakdown.

Alternative Routes

Avoid crossing the National Mall. Depending on your destination, consider Massachusetts Avenue, K Street, New York Avenue or Florida Avenue.

Drivers coming from Virginia may consider Key Bridge or Theodore Roosevelt Bridge for Northwest DC. For Southwest DC or The Wharf, expect detours toward Maine Avenue. I-695 may be a better option for Southeast DC and Capitol Hill.

Tips for Moving in DC This Weekend

Before moving day:

  • Confirm that the loading dock and garage entrance will be accessible.
  • Check for emergency no-parking signs.
  • Allow at least 30–60 extra minutes.
  • Keep proof of the customer’s address in the truck.
  • Prepare a backup parking location and route.
  • Consider rescheduling if either address is inside the closure zone.

A regular DC moving permit does not override emergency parking restrictions. Moving trucks may be allowed onto local-access streets, but police can still redirect them.
